Senior Software Engineer — Java

• At least ten years of full-time professional software engineering before AI coding tools, which became mainstream in 2022–2023. In practice: you have worked full-time as a software engineer, mainly in Java, since 2013 or earlier.
• Experience that was significant, not incidental: you designed, wrote, debugged and maintained systems that ran in production for years.

Years alone do not make someone senior, but here they are a hard requirement. Our clients rely on engineers who can tell when code is wrong, including code written by an AI, because they have seen the consequences many times.

• Java in depth, from the language and the JVM to concurrency, memory and performance
• Spring and Spring Boot in production, Hibernate / JPA and SQL, including the queries Hibernate generates
• Distributed systems: REST APIs, messaging (e.g. Kafka), consistency, failure handling
• Security fundamentals: authentication and authorization, OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect, dependency hygiene
• Automated testing, Git and continuous delivery as everyday practice
• The ability to understand a large, old, undocumented codebase and change it safely
• Direct, clear communication with clients, in writing and in person

Welcome but not required: Jakarta EE, Quarkus, Kotlin, React and TypeScript, cloud platforms, observability, Python, experience in finance, life sciences or manufacturing.

• English: required. It is our working language with clients across Switzerland and in all documentation.
• Italian: good to have. Many of our clients are in Ticino.

There are no junior, mid-level or intern positions, now or in a later "growth" phase. We are a small group of senior engineers who each take responsibility for real systems. That is the offer to our clients, and it is the only way we want to grow.

We use AI tools every day where they make us faster, and we build AI features on the JVM for our clients. But this is an engineering job, not an AI job. AI accelerates people who already know what correct, secure and maintainable software looks like; it does not replace that knowledge. We are not looking for AI enthusiasm or prompt skills, but for judgement built over years.

Remote-first, with an office in Lugano. You visit clients for kick-offs, workshops, important decisions and handovers. We work as a consultancy that owns its deliverables: you will not be placed inside a client's team under their direction.

Collaboration as a freelancer or contractor, or employment when a project requires it. You need a work authorization that fits the actual arrangement; we do not promise cross-border employment schemes that have not been set up.
